Major General Thomas Pinckney

Madison was in desperate need for Federalist support of the War and was wise enough to appoint Pinckney to Major General in March 1812. Sent to command the Carolinas and Georgia, Pinckney had an on and off again relationship with his peers. His real talent was with raising and training regular troops . . . a task at which he excelled.

Pinckney was responsible for creating the 39th Regiment, which Jackson put to good use at Horseshoe Bend in 1814.

In this respect, Pinckney was the perfect Federalist general, capable, loyal, but not so effective as to become a threat to Madison and his supporters
