HISTORY

Common Punishments

Common punishments were fines, hard labor (with a ball and chain) and/or reduced rations.

One soldier, William Fish, was placed in an upright coffin with a hat placed over his eyes and shot for desertion and threatening the life of his commanding officer. Three other troopers were also commended to death, but they were pardoned. But they were only told this after they were placed in their coffins in the same manner as Pvt. Fish.
