HISTORY

November 7, 1814
Occupation of Pensacola

Knowing that British forces were using Spanish West Florida as a supply base to arm the Creeks, Jackson established an invasion force at Mobile in August 1814 in preparation to capture Pensacola. The Spanish garrison surrendered within minutes of the direct arrival of US troops— despite early refusals to surrender. Before Jackson could move on the remaining British forces , located at a nearby fort, the British retreated, blowing up the harbor defenses as they evacuated.

On November 9, after the withdrawal of the British, Jackson returned control of Pensacola to the Spanish governor.

Jackson marched his troops back to Mobile, arriving on November 19.
