Unsung Heroes

Stephen Pleasonton took it upon himself to remove important documents before the burning of Washington. He had removed the secret journals of Congress, the correspondence of George Washington, The Bill or Rights and the Declaration of Independence. While removing the documents, Pleasonton ran into Secretary of War Armstrong who ordered him to return the documents to storage. Pleasonton refused.

The building where they had been stored was burned later that day with all the remaining content inside.
