US Army Integration

2013 marks the 65th anniversary of the integration of the armed forces, yet during the War of 1812, free men of color served in the same units as their neighbors without a second thought. Private Cato Williams joined the 11th Regiment in May 1812, John Alfred the 30th Regiment, Nathan Gilbert, John Moore and Jacob Palmer the 31st.

It would take the US Army 133 years to return the Army to this integrated state.
