Brock's Duel

While stationed in Barbados with the 49th Regiment of Foot, Isaac Brock ran afoul of another officer who like to insult the other officers in order to provoke a Duel. This officer was a rather good shot and consistently dispatched opponents at a distance of 12 paces.

When Brock was targeted, we obliged the officer by asking for a duel, but then refused to fire. He demanded to fire while both officers were holding opposite ends of a handkerchief with the other hand. This put both opponents in point blank range, insuring that injury and quite possibly death would be the result.

The other officer backed down and was forced to transfer to another regiment .
