HISTORY

Not the Desired Result

Some writers say the burning of Washington as a major feat of arms: "a hand full of … Englishman making their appearance in the midst of a state embracing ten millions of people, taking position of it's capital, and destroying all the public buildings, results unparalleled in history" according to Baron de Jomini, a French general who changed sides to become a general in the allied Russian army.

Despite Cockburn's and Jomini's view of the operation as a success, the event did not produce the intended results; no troops were diverted from the Canadian fronts and although disapproval with the American government of Madison reached new heights, it did not force the US government to sue for peace but actually increased anti-British felling in the US more than anti-Madison feeling. The end result was not what the British expected at all.
