Medical Improvements

The early 19th century saw some major improvements in the treatment of wounded, many of which remain in place to this day. These changes are mostly the work of Dominique Larry, Napoleon's chief surgeon. This includes first instances of treatment based on severity of the wound (triage) rather than based on rank. It also involved the use of horse-drawn wagons for removal of the wounded back to medical tents and the removal of severely damaged limbs before they became septic and thus fatal.
