Standing Orders

For the attack on York in April 1813, Brig. Gen. Zebulon Pike issued orders that all civilian property be respected and that any soldier "guilty of plundering, if convicted, be punished with death."

There is no evidence to indicate that this was an idle threat . . . Pike was known to keep his word . . . but his mortal injury early in the battle resulted in a significantly different outcome than the one Pike originally intended.
