Worn Out

When British troops arrived from Europe in 1814, Sir George Prevost was not pleased; they were a motley looking set of units. Red uniforms had faded to pink. Some troops wore French uniforms as theirs had fallen from their shoulders. Cuffs and collars were worn out. Royal Regiment uniforms were supposed to be lined and faced with bright blue, they now appeared a buff color and indistinguishable from the other regiments of yellow, green, white or crimson facings.

The Duke of Wellington preferred fighting men and was little concerned with their appearance. Sir George was the opposite, which did not endear him to officers who had fought Napoleon .
