HISTORY

Private William Bull

In March 1814, William Bull enlisted at the age of 19. Technically to join at this age required a parent's approval. In Bull's case, both his parents were dead, but he was allowed to sign up anyway. Later he deserted, was apprehended and convicted. The Massachusetts Judicial Supreme Court overturned the conviction on the grounds that the enlistment was invalid. Being less that 21, they ruled that he was an infant and was not able to legally sign the enlistment papers. They ordered his discharge.
