First Peace Talks, March 5, 1813

Tsar Alexander I of Russia offers to mediate a peace for the war of 1812 . . . the US after all was a major trading partner of the Russian empire. Madison sent James Bayard and Albert Gallatin to St. Petersburg to join Ambassador John Quincy Adams to take part in the talks.

The American delegation spent six months in Russia before they discovered that the British had refused the proposal.
