HISTORY

Spanglish

Pensacola Florida was protected from attack by two forts. Although a Spanish colony, the two forts were manned by British Royal Marines under Major Edward Nicolls. This made Pensacola a required target in Andrew Jackson's eyes relative to the defense of New Orleans and Mobile.

Of course it also means that the only piece of territory gained by the United States as a result of the War of 1812 was protected by British troops.
