Federal Republican

On July 27, 1812 a mob in Baltimore attacked the antiwar newspaper the Federal Republican during the war. As a result of the attack both the publisher Alexander Contee Hanson and General "Light-Horse" Harry Lee, Revolutionary War hero and father of Robert E. Lee were beaten and tortured by the mob for over three hours.

General "Light-Horse" Harry Lee never fully recovered. The attack altered his speech until his death in 1818.
