British Unit Classes

There are four classes of troops engaged in the War of 1812 for the Great Britain:

Regulars: Long term professional troops who were supplied, paid and trained by the Royal Government.
Fencibles: Locally raised and trained troops who were trained and treated like regular troops but could not serve beyond their region. North American Fencibles served only in North America.
Provincial Troops: Local soldiers who were trained and paid by local provincial governments. These units were given regular army uniforms, so were often hard to distinguish on the field from regular troops.
Militia: Troops raised for an undetermined amount of time specifically to repel invasion. Canadian Militia received far more training than their American counterparts.
