Just Attack

Below is a letter form Secretary of War Armstrong to William Henry Harrison advising him to abandon Ft. Meigs and advance on Ft. Malden. Since this letter is dated before the battle of Put-In-Bay, that would have left Harrison cut off from all supply. Good thing he didn't listen.

Sir,

The best interpretation of the late movement of the enemy in your quarter is, that De Rohenberg[?] has detached to the aid of Proctor between four & five hundred men and that with these, he is attempting to save Malden by attacking Fort Meigs. If this conjecture be well founded, it suggests the true policy on one part, provided our Flotella ware over the bar - go directly to Malden, & leave Mr. Proctor to amuse himself with Fort Meigs. There is no objection to your appointing the sergeants to other officers pro tempere. Capt. Butter has been appointed Major of the 32d. Regt. & Mr. McGee Capt in the 42d.

I am sir, very respectfully Your most obed servant
John Armstrong
